Tips To Make Fresh Produce Last Longer
19/6/2023
Here’s a simple guide to store your fresh produce to help them last longer, and help you save on groceries!
1. Prevent potatoes from turning brown
Cover sliced or diced potato with cold water to prevent the spuds from turning brown due to oxidation.
2. Keep bananas fresher for longer
Wrap the end of the bunch with plastic wrap to block ethylene gas from releasing out of the stem, hence ripening the fruit too fast.
3. Swaddle your herbs
Yes, like a baby. Wash your herbs but remember to dry them as much as possible. Bundle the herbs in a dry paper towel and place them in a resealable plastic bag.
4. As much as possible, store your produce dry
Too much moisture can promote mold, so make sure you thoroughly dry anything you’re washing before placing it in the fridge.
5. Freeze
Let fruit reach the desired stage of ripeness, then peel and cut into pieces if necessary and freeze in a single layer on a parchment-lined sheet tray until sold. Break up the frozen pieces and store in a resealable plastic bag for up to 3 months.
6. Store apples and fruits in the fridge
For the longest shelf life, store apples, citrus fruits, and pears in the fridge. If space is limited, store them in a cool, dark place. Apples are best stored on their own.
