The Conscious Customer Trend

Conscious consumers or “belief-driven buyers” are seeking to better understand the impact of their purchases on the planet and thus expect brands to advocate for social, cultural, and environmental issues.

This means that consumers want to know what the product is made from, how it is made, and which community is involved in making it. Businesses must ensure that they are entirely transparent about whether their products are made ethically and sustainably, or not.

The trend has also brought about a range of earth-friendly food products, namely organic or local produce and plant-based alternatives. Otherwise, brands that use responsibly-sourced ingredients such as Nutella remain the ideal choice for conscious consumers. The palm oil used in its products is traced back all the way to its mills, ensuring it doesn’t come from deforested plantations.

The fashion industry doesn’t stray too far from this trend. Conscious customers are supporting smaller fashion brands that take more responsible approaches to reduce the industry’s percentage of carbon emissions and waste. Such brands would upcycle materials like plastic and offset whatever’s left.

Sustainable packaging also becomes an important criterion for conscious customers. Unnecessary boxes and bubble wraps are being replaced by reusable containers, while plastic or paper bags are no longer provided by most shops. Instead, they encourage customers to bring their own reusable bags.

If you’re a business owner, consider turning your enterprise green. Not only it attracts these conscious customers, but you’re also doing our planet a favor.
