Sun & Serotonin: How Sunlight Can Improve Your Mood And Sleep
16/6/2023
Your serotonin and melatonin levels in your brain play an important role in maintaining a good mood and sleep. However, we’re told that the sun’s rays can be harmful to your skin. But with a moderate amount and proper care, your body will thank you.
Serotonin and melatonin
Sunlight triggers the release of hormone serotonin which helps your body to feel calm and focused. The melatonin, on the other hand, is produced from the chemical melanin by which its production is triggered by sun exposure. With a balanced amount of melatonin in your brain, you’ll be able to get better quality of sleep.
Mental health
Since serotonin production is induced through sunlight, lack of sun exposure can trigger depression and anxiety. You’ll notice that you would feel down more on darker, gloomy days where the days are shorter.
While exposing your sun can improve your mental wellbeing and sleep quality, you may also be exposed to harmful UV radiation that damages cell DNA which can lead to skin cancer. Try getting the most out of the morning sun between 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. as sunlight after those hours until 4 p.m. can be more direct and intense. Do apply sunscreen when you’re outdoors to prevent sun damage on the skin, especially if you have fairer skin.
